Periodontal

Trouble with the gums is generally associated with adulthood. Unlike tooth decay, gum disease does not hurt generally until it is too late to save the teeth. Because it is a problem that advances without much discomfort, maintaining regular recall visits is very important.

Stages of Gum Problems

  • 1st stage is gingivitis, a reversible process if treated.
  • 2nd stage is early bone loss around the teeth, causing increased pocket depth. If treated early we can see improvement and establish an ability to help control recurrence.
  • Later stages can be treated successfully, but generally a referral to a gum specialist is necessary following initial therapy.
  • Other gum problems are recession and subsequent root sensitivity. If treated early, this too can be successfully managed.

Expectations

When it comes to your gums, signs of sensitivity and/or bleeding are indicators treatment is recommended. Periodontal treatment is designed to promote soft tissue healing. Routinely, we treat gum disease initially with deep cleaning therapy. This can help stop or slow down the loss of bone around your teeth. Management of gum disease has become much more focused in the last 20 years. Treatment can help people keep their teeth for a lifetime. Once advancement of gum disease has been controlled, more frequent cleanings will be necessary to help prevent reactivity.
